What is it about?

The instrument universal Assessment of Learning Process (ALP) was tested for inter-rater reliability and the raters experiences of using the instrument was explored. They assessed video-clips where persons with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities practiced using one micro-switch to activate a powered mobility platform with a line-follower system. The study showed acceptable reliability for using the ALP to support tool-use learning in this population. Assessing phase of learning guides choice of facilitating strategies matching the individuals actual phase of learning, this support enables the individual to advance their tool-use understanding.

Why is it important?

Supporting individuals with profound disabilities in learning to use an AKKA powered mobility platform for self-produced mobility is important as this activity provides opportunities to actively engage and make choices, which may increase their sense of control and enable initiatives to do more activities and participate on their own terms. Individuals who get support to engage in learning self-produced mobility grow more conscious of their own abilities and develop their understanding of relationships to their physical and social surroundings.

Perspectives

Persons with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities are dependent on others support to engage in activities. Opportunity to be active and participate is a human right. We who support persons with profound disabilities have the obligation to search for tools that can be used to empower each individual by meeting their abilities and needs in best possible way. The micro-switch activated AKKA mobility platform with line-follower system and the universal ALP-tool can be used to support tool-use learning and thereby empower the individual.
