What is it about?

This article aims to (1) explain tool-use learning in powered mobility intervention; (2) explain the distinguishing characteristics of process-based and task-based approaches; (3) give an in-depth description of how to use the Assessment of Learning Powered mobility use (ALP), version 2.0; and (4) highlight the benefits of using the ALP-tool, with a focus on beginners in learning. The ALP-tool can be downloaded for free at https://lisbethnilsson.se/en/alp-tool

Why is it important?

By understanding the tool-use learning process, and applying the ALP-tool it is possible to support development of abilities and learning in beginners across the lifespan. The ALP-instrument is used to assess actual stage of exploration and phase of learning of how to use the powered mobility device - the tool. The assessed stage and phase guides the choice of ALP-facilitating strategies matching the beginners actual understanding of tool-use.

Perspectives

Application of the ALP-tool can support beginners in developing their abilities and reaching unexpected outcomes in learning how to use a powered mobility device (tool-use). Supporting the understanding of self-produced powered mobility in infants, children and adults with different abilities is of high importance for each individual's overall "growing consciousness" of the world they live in.
