What is it about?
The objective was to evaluate the effect of design elements and parameters on the strength of bolted lateral connections in steel beams. The variables studied were plate thickness, horizontal and vertical spacing between bolts, and geometric arrangement of bolts. Finite element software was used to analyze stress distribution, plastic deformation, and bolt shear.

Why is it important?
Placing bolts near the edge of a plate affects bolt utilization, and introducing an offset between central and outer bolt rows worsens stress distribution and structural performance.
Perspectives
The findings can significantly contribute to the design and construction of efficient and safe steel joints for building structures.
