What is it about?

Cloudbursts in cold-region of Ladakh Himalaya is frequently occurring. Extremely limited spatial spread of such events are not well appreciated. This paper shows such events can occur in the non-monsoon season, having extremely small <3 km2 spread and highly devastating. Call for better monitoring mechanism in place for early warning as well as process understanding.

Why is it important?

Paper is based on a rare Sentinel image capture of a live event showing CB flood in the stream, providing an important visual evidence for such a small event.

Perspectives

Number of such small CB events are occurring in the region, but not able to discover them dur to its limited spatial spread. Whether such events are increasing in this region, owing to the climate change is a big question. But nobody could establish that without enumerating all the events in a region over a long period of time. conventional and satellite measurements are not capable of capturing the small events. Solutions will emerge only when start appreciating the existence of such small events. This paper aimed to achieve that all important step for designing the future monitoring and research.
