What is it about?

In this paper we explain new methods we have recently developed using proteomics to understand the causes of Alzheimer's disease. We explain that use of this technique allowed us to study the proteome of amyloid deposits in a subtype of AD: rapidly progressive AD (rpAD). We found numerous novel proteins associated with the proteome of amyloid plaques, as well as novel proteins such as POTEE specifically in rpAD. This study point to potential new therapeutic approaches for AD. We also explain novel ways to potential treat AD, such as stimulation of innate immunity and the direct immunotherapeutic targeting of abnormal conformation. The latter approach can reduce both amyloid plaque and tau pathology at the same time.
