What is it about?

Designs that evoke fun and surprise had been successful in driving uncommon positive behavior. Products and services can elicit strong affective responses that can be harnessed for specific purposes such as increasing consumption. Affective design (AD) can be used to address contemporary issues related to consumption, waste management, and compliance.

Why is it important?

The integration of affect in design is a strategy that can be used to prompt behavior beneficial to society and the environment.


Writing this article was fun and challenging because I had to give convincing arguments about the potential benefits of affective design. It led me to the interesting work of many authors that broadened my understanding of the methods and applications of AD.
