What is it about?

Current public health crisis created opportunities for the evolution of a novel model of health care delivery for pediatric physiatrists by hybridizing both in person and virtual evaluations.This literature review will explore how telemedicine can optimize health care delivery options for pediatric rehabilitation physicians.

Why is it important?

Out of 43 pediatric subspecialties in the United States, Pediatric Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) had the least established telemedicine services.This is a first comprehensive review where we reviewed potential for prudent use of telemedicine in the field of pediatric rehabilitation medicine. Introduction of telemedicine holds promise as a solution for both caregivers and providers to optimize care and eliminate some of the barriers in overall health care delivery.

Perspectives

I hope this article will enable pediatric rehabilitation medicine providers worldwide to explore telemedicine capabilities in various clinical practice settings. The introduction of telemedicine in the practice of pediatric physiatry as a standard of care can be viewed as a significant value-added quality tool. Additional research and tremendous amount of collaborations across multiple disciplines are necessary for prudent use of telemedicine in growing field of pediatric rehabilitation medicine.
