What is it about?

The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platforms has been increasing day by day and it has become an important technology. In this study, how the engines should be selected in the design of a rotary wing UAV system is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. This MCDM problem has not yet been encountered in the literature. Therefore, a hybrid MCDM approach based on fuzzy Best Worst Method (BWM) and Multi Attributive Ideal-Real Comparative Analysis (MAIRCA) is proposed to solve this problem.

Why is it important?

The contributions and novelty of this study may be listed as follows: • This study discusses the problem of which engine should be selected in the design of the rotary wing UAV. A multi criteria decision making problem with selection of engine in design the UAV has not yet been encountered in the literature. • A hybrid MCDM approach based on the fuzzy BWM and the MAIRCA is proposed to solve the problem. The fuzzy BWM was used to decide the weights of the criteria. Alternative ranking was done with the MAIRCA. • A study in which the fuzzy BWM and the MAIRCA are used together has not been encountered yet in the literature. However, there is only one study in which the fuzzy BWM and the fuzzy MAIRCA were used. That is the study conducted by Gul and Ak (2020). • The fuzzy BWM and the MAIRCA methods may be shown among the newly multi criteria decision making methods. Therefore, this study will contribute to the literature of both methods. • Both sensitivity and comparative analyses were conducted.

Perspectives

This study can trigger the following studies: • Development and implementation of new solution methods for the problem addressed in this study. For example; Different methods can be used both in the weighting of the criteria and in the selection of the appropriate engine. • Development and application of similar methods for the correct selection of other important parts (such as propellers) in rotary-wing UAVs. • Addressing engine or propeller selection problems for different UAV types and developing new methods to solve this problem.
