What is it about?
Defense organizations, unlike classical organizations, have several states of functioning, and the transition from one state to another is determined by events. Each state has its own business technology, as a set of business processes. The information system that supports business processes is therefore more complex in defense organizations. This paper provides a proposal for the assessment of the complexity of the information systems of defense organizations, as an upgrade to the assessment of the complexity of the information systems of classical organizations.

Why is it important?
The assessment of information system (IS) complexity is essential for estimating the amount of work needed for software application development as well as for selecting the appropriate IS development methods. Genetic taxonomy of IS does not only enable IS classification according to characteristics of organizational processes supported by the observed IS, but it also provides grounding for the assessment of IS complexity according to characteristics of processes performed within the organization. The more complex the organization, the more important is the assessment of the complexity of its information system. This leads us to the importance of assessing the complexity of information systems for defense organizations.
