Many don't understand what NISO does and hot it functions. Even fewer people understand how standards development process works. This article outlines both how NISO is setup, who participates, and how NISO creates standards for the information community.

Why is it important?

Standards play a critical role in the creation, dissemination, structure, discovery, delivery and preservation of content in all its forms. This was true in an analog world, but is increasingly more so in our digital ecosystem of content. Publishers, librarians, intermediaries, authors and consumers of content really need to understand how these systems function if they are to effectively navigate the world of content.
