What is it about?

Spheroid cultures have the advantage of adding a third dimension to the study of apoptosis at a cellular level in glioma, indicating how transformed cells grow and develop, and how they respond to anti-tumour agents, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Why is it important?

Apoptosis and cell death in the core of a tumour is a hallmark of glioma malignancy. It is also an indicator of tumour regression, when wider areas of the tumour show evidence of apoptosis, during treatment. This study presents evidence of both central necrosis/apoptosis and disseminated cell death in response to polyunsaturated fatty acids.
