What is it about?

In this study, we assess the 30 day complications rates for children undergoing a lengthening of their growth friendly spinal implants using the pediatric NSQIP database to determine if postoperative admission has an effect on the occurrence of postoperative complications.

Why is it important?

Using a large, multi-center database, we were able to assess if poster active admission status has any effect on complications rates following lengthening of a growth friendly spinal implant.

Perspectives

Postoperative admission did not effect the rate of complications for children undergoing a lengthening of growth friendly spinal implants, suggesting that outpatient lengthening is a safe practice. Children with pre operative respiratory difficulty, requiring positive airway support or ventilation, should undergo postoperative admission.
