How Mycobacterium tuberculosis uses cholesterol

What is it about?

Tuberculosis is a disease that infects one-third of the world's population; however, little is known about how the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria are so effective at causing disease within the host, and spreading disease so efficiently. Cholesterol is a steroid that is present in abundance within the pathologic lesions associated with tuberculosis disease. This review summarizes what we know about how they utilize this molecule to their advantage throughout the course of their lifecycle.

Why is it important?

This is the first and only review article to summarize how Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which cause tuberculosis disease, utilize the mammalian steroid cholesterol.
