What is it about?

In Spain, students who want to go to university take an entrance examination that includes a foreign language test, usually English. This study analysed the internal validity of the English test of the university entrance examination (EvAU) in the Community of Madrid, using the results of 4,243 candidates who took it in June 2021.

Why is it important?

The results provide evidence of the technical quality of the test, but also point to items that need revision: the true/false questions appear to be the easiest and the vocabulary-location questions the most difficult, and the uneven results in the writing tasks suggest the need for more analytic and objective scoring instruments. The study argues for rethinking some item types in this high-stakes exam.

Perspectives

The English test of the Spanish university entrance examination has been a central topic of my research since my doctoral thesis. This study, written with Judit Ruiz-Lázaro and Jesús García Laborda, uses real candidate data to contribute to the debate on how the test can be improved.
