What is it about?

We explore the impact of new data layers on how cities and their inhabitants interact and how this data can be utilized to analyze and predict patterns and behaviours, ultimately shaping environments to suit users better. We reviewed concepts from digital architectural discourse and advocated for integrating this digital cultural context into the design process. We emphasize the importance of considering city-wide digital logic as an integral part of the urban landscape. It provides a lens into our environment and offers opportunities to influence design at multiple scales. We present the implications of big data and digital identity on the built environment, advocating for authenticity and a deeper understanding of the evolving relationship between technology and design.

Why is it important?

We address the evolving relationship between technology, data, and the built environment. By examining the impact of new layers of data on cities and their inhabitants and advocating for integrating digital cultural context into the design process, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of how technology and big data can shape urban environments to suit users better. Our exploration of the city-wide digital logic presents opportunities to influence design at multiple scales, emphasizing the significance of authenticity and the potential for a more holistic approach to design that considers the digital landscape an integral part of the urban fabric. Ultimately, we underscore the importance of embracing the evolving digital cultural landscape and its implications for future design practices and urban experiences.

Perspectives

From a design perspective, we provide a forward-looking exploration of the profound impact of new digital cultural layers on the built environment, emphasizing the potential for data integration to reshape urban landscapes and enhance user experiences. By advocating for integrating digital cultural context into the design process, we foster a shift towards a more holistic and responsive approach to urban design that considers the city-wide digital logic as an integral component. This perspective underscores the importance of authenticity and the recognition of the evolving relationship between technology, data, and design, offering new opportunities to influence design at various scales and advocating for a deeper understanding of the implications of big data and digital identity on the built environment.
