Why is it important?

Lumbar manipulation is widely accepted and used as a treatment for adults with low back pain. Little research has been conducted with regards to manipulation on adolescents. This paper demonstrated feasibility for future randomized control trials used to evaluate the effectiveness of lumbar manipulation as an adjunct to therapeutic exercise in adolescents with low back pain.

Perspectives

I am a senior clinic director for an outpatient physical therapy company (PT Solutions). I treat full time and have used the methods discussed in the JOSPT paper many times with success. I have seen and performed manipulation myself on many adolescent patients and believe it is a safe and effective adjunct to therapeutic exercise.
