What is it about?

Going to outer space is a human endeavour. This paper described the use of singular value decomposition in the structural dynamics community to identify ranks of mass and stiffness matrices that have great significance in building and deploying safe spacecrafts and structures.

Why is it important?

People tend to use computer simulations and models for reproducing what have been known to them. Nevertheless, the 'real' mechanism and physical reality should be carefully and thoroughly considered if we are going to reach out to outer space which is full of uncertainty and unpredictable events.

Perspectives

It is a very old article but I revisit it periodically. Singular value decomposition is a fascinating tool that I found it in engineering (for modeling of structural elements), in social sciences (for determining eigenvalues in principal component analysis), and in economics (for understanding "power" between difference economies).
