What is it about?

In 2017, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency successfully reduced noise from the main landing gear of their “Hisho” research aircraft by 4.2 to 4.4 dB during a flight test. We used a special axle cover made from a porous metal plate, which proved to be the most effective noise-reduction method. The design of this cover was based on wind-tunnel tests, featuring 2 mm circular holes arranged in a staggered pattern. We also compared different materials using computer simulations to better understand how the cover helps reduce noise.
