What is it about?

Aerodynamic shape optimization of the wings for drag reduction is critical as it increases the performance of the aircraft by reducing fuel consumption. We investigate the impact of turbulence models on three-dimensional optimum wing design obtained with deterministic and robust aerodynamic shape optimization in transonic, viscous, turbulent flow. We evaluate the impact of turbulence models and different weight distributions in the multi-objective function (equal, mean-biased, variance-biased) on the computational cost, optimum shape, and its performance under Mach number uncertainty obtained with robust optimization.
