What is it about?

The abstract describes a way to prevent diabetes development in NOD mice. GITR receptor is overexpressed by regulatory T (Treg) cells. Its triggering by an anti-GITR IgM antibody favors Treg expansion and saves pancreatic islets from the autoimmune attack.

Why is it important?

Treatment of diabetes is based on the prevention of the damnage derived by hyperglycemia. The treatment we describe here can prevent diabetes development

Perspectives

The approach we used can be translated to humans. In fact, when type 1 diabetes is diagnosed pancreatic islets are still present. The eventual expansion of Treg cells by an anti-GITR antibody protects pancreatic islets and might cure the patients.
