What is it about?
It has been known for years that 10 to 30 percent of people with type 2 diabetes have a magnesium deficiency. The long-term consequences of such a deficiency were unknown until now. Patients with type 2 diabetes and a magnesium deficiency have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

Why is it important?
Hypomagnesemia is often been considered an harmless side-effect of diabetes. This study demonstrates that higher magnesium levels are associated with decreased risk of heart failure, atrial fibrillation and microvascular complications.
Perspectives
Future studies should examine whether magnesium supplements can reduce cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes.
