Why is it important?

A wide range of governments are providing open data and people are beginning to analyze the data. This paper provides some historical background and lays out some of the implications of the crowd analyzing open data. There are both some potential advantages and disadvantages of this approach. We also apply activity theory in order to provide a model to help elicit and understand key concerns.

Perspectives

Historically, the crowd has proposed ideas, commented on ideas, voted on ideas, etc. However, the notion of armchair auditors illustrates some of the possibilities of having the crowd analyze data.
