What is it about?

This paper makes a strong case that student's interest and enjoyment in what they are studying are extremely important factors in influencing whether they set out to memorise (a surface approach to learning) or to understand (a deep approach to learning). It further argues that students prefix the word 'understand' with certain authoritative adjectives that indicate whether their intention is to memorise or to understand.

Why is it important?

Universities claim to want to students to understand (use a deep approach to learning), yet if students are not interested, nor do not enjoy studying a topic they are more likely to set out to memorise rather than understand.

Perspectives

It's important because if we want students to understand, rather than memorise, we have to stimulate their interest and enjoyment.
