What is it about?
What learner autonomy is and how difficult it is to actually measure/assess it. How mentoring processes may help the development and assessment of student autonomy.

Why is it important?
The paper is important because universities make claims in marketing and mission statements that they develop student autonomy, yet they rarely clearly define what they mean by this and rarely actually assesses autonomy, therefore these claims are frequently unjustifiable and false, they cannot be proven. The paper provides a potential solution to this through the use of mentoring schemes.
Perspectives
I hope this will stimulate people to think carefully about the claims that universities make in their marketing and programmes descriptors. Further, that they make start to thinking in-depth about what learner autonomy is and how it may be assessed.
