What is it about?

The aim of this chapter is to help understand the management of goods and waste in big cities, and the choice among alternative intermodal transport solutions, particularly with the use of rail freight instead of trucks.

Why is it important?

A taxonomy of the reviewed city logistics models in big cities is compiled. In addition, the application of an alternative model applied for the transport of waste in a suburb of the Metropolitan Athens, Greece is presented.

Perspectives

Our findings show that city logistics practices for the transportation of both goods and waste are a key component of sustainable cities.
