What is it about?

Oxizymes are oxidative enzymes that catalyze a wide range of industrial useful reactions by using molecular oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as co-substrate. In this article we summarize the properties of flavin-, heme- and copper-dependent oxizymes and their applications in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics and biorefinery industries.

Why is it important?

Chemical oxidation reactions, although interesting from a synthetic point of view, are difficult to control in the artificial environment of man-made industry. This and the growing awareness of sustainability issues make oxidative enzymes with their high chemo-, regio- and enantioselectivities valuable targets for a wide range of applications.

Perspectives

The recent improvements in the production of oxizymes at large scale hold great promise for the successful application of these versatile biocatalysts in different industries.
