What is it about?
This article is an Editorial explaining the research subjects of the articles collected in a Special Issue published on the experimentation of new species recognized to be potential candidates for diversification in Mediterrean aquaculture. Among the main research themes, nutritional , reproductive and physiological aspects are reported and their implications are discussed in a general context of fish welfare.

Why is it important?
The future of aquaculture depends on the diversification through the introduction of new fish species in farming practices, in order to respond to the market requirements. Especially in the Mediterranean area, where sea bass and sea bream are the main reared species, diversification in fish farming is attracting increasing attention.
Perspectives
Experimentation on new fish species could play a key role for the success of future aquaculture productions.
