What is it about?

Almost all bacteria need iron for their growth and survival; hence, the ability of N. meningitidis to acquire iron in a situation where iron levels are very low and limited (under host body conditions) undoubtedly is one of the reasons that N. meningitidiscan survive within the host and cause bacterial infections in children and even healthy adults. Also, various biological functions are proposed for TA systems and experimental evidence has shown that these systems have a wide range of functions, including defense against bacteriophages, the formation of persister cells and programmed cell death. Generally, given the nature of TA systems, the toxin is neutralized permanently by the antitoxin. so in this study, MazEF toxin-antitoxin system and FbpA as the main transporter of iron to the cytosol of N. meningitidis was targeted by antisense PNA .

Why is it important?

In accordance with the importance of N. meningitidis and its potential to cause infection, there is a focus on finding the new target involved in the pathogenesis.

Perspectives

It is very important that the anti- fbpA PNA shortly killed the microorganism in low concentrations when compared with antibiotics. Therefore, it is recommended that other virulence genes in N. meningitidis are analyzed by antisense PNA to detect their functionality.
