What is it about?

We reviewed available literature about Diabetes mellitus (DM), problems arising from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), T2DM treatment, and the use of natural-based products in T2DM treatment with special emphasis for potential use of algae as new resource in T2DM treatment.

Why is it important?

This review article gives an overview of the latest published results about new challenges in T2DM treatment. The effectiveness of medicinal plants examined in in vivo and clinical studies was reviewed. The available data about the potential use of algae in T2DM treatment and their chemical composition was discussed.

Perspectives

There is the great interest for further research of algae as source of bioactive compounds for T2DM prevention and treatment.
