What is it about?

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly entering language teaching and assessment. This article looks at how these tools are being integrated into the assessment of foreign languages. Using a mixed approach, it reviews the specialised literature and gathers data through surveys and interviews with education professionals, in order to understand the main trends and challenges of these tools.

Why is it important?

The results show that AI applications are efficient and can adapt to individual learners' needs, but they also face important challenges, including ethical issues and resistance to change among teachers and students. The article concludes that AI needs careful, strategic planning if it is to be incorporated effectively into language education and improve both teaching and assessment methods.

Perspectives

Written with Jesús García Laborda and Teresa Magal-Royo, this article reflects my interest in how new technologies are changing language assessment. Generative AI is moving fast, and I hope this analysis helps teachers and institutions plan its use carefully.
