What is it about?
The purpose of this research was to allow more of the brine in a chlor-alkali plant to be recovered and reused. The current state of the technology requires a portion of the brine to be purged to the environment. This research provides a method to eliminate this purge step. The research also reduces the chlorate to chlorine derivatives that are valuable to the chlor alkali plant. The solution used for this, is a co-product of the chlor-alkali process.

Why is it important?
Reduces the release of chlorate to the environment. Chlorates are known to be toxic to some aquatic life. Chlorate poisoning has also killed humans and livestock.
Perspectives
This research paves the way to avoid the release of this toxic substance to the environment. As a chlor-alkali plant operator, I was blissfully unaware of the dangers of chlorate to the environment until I commenced this research. More chlor-alkali plant operators must be made aware of the toxic nature of their release. My main driver for pursuing this research was to recover as much brine as possible.
