What is it about?

A patient who does not tolerate statins due to unacceptable side effects; the prominent one being memory dysfunction had her side effect cleared when a low dose of statin was given with Co-enzyme Q10. This permitted continuation of treatment and correction of her dyslipidaemia

Why is it important?

It is important because dyslipidaemia puts patients at risk for atherosclerotic vascular diseases; and statin treatment which is effective is hampered by unacceptable side effects. Discontinuation of statins leaves patients at high risk, but Co-enzyme Q10 supplementation clears the side effects allowing patients the benefit of statin treatment. Use of statins depletes the body of its store of Co-enzyme Q10, an important co-factor in mitochondrial energy metabolism

Perspectives

I feel this will encourage clinicians facing situations where patients needing statins for cardiovascular health but are intolerant because of unacceptable side effects consequent upon Co-enzyme Q10 depletion can continue treatment with appropriate supplementation
