Why is it important?
Gefitinib is a key drug of the agents for non-small-cell lung cancer with an epidermal growth-factor receptor mutation. However, gefitinib has to be discontinued for patients in whom liver damage occur, even if it is still effective. Therefore, the alternate-day administration is a solution to continue the therapy with gefitinib.
Perspectives
With regard to the incidence of adverse events, gefitinib should be cautiously used with monitoring liver function closely for advanced NSCLC patients who have previously undergone chemotherapy, because it frequently induces significant liver damage in such patients. Alternate-day administration of gefitinib may be a suitable option for patients in whom daily gefitinib therapy induces liver damage.
