What is it about?

This study reveals that bone metabolism and thyroid function may be perturbed by the occurrence of diabetic ketosis or ketoacidosis, and the recurrence of such condition is associated with declined bone markers.

Why is it important?

We are eager to know whether the bone metabolism is more weakened in the background of ketosis or ketoacidosis than the normal diabetes mellitus which has been reported to be associated with primary or secondary osteoporosis. Another question will be the rationale for administering vitamin D or calcium supplements to these patients to prevent a higher risk of bone osteoporosis or bone fracture.

Perspectives

We found an overt decline tendency of bone markers in patients with T2D only, DK or DKA, the disturbance of the thyroid function is significantly lower in DKA patients. What will be important to figure out is the mechanism underlying this observation, including the possible connection between thyroid function and bone markers.
