What is it about?

When fixed dental implant supported prostheses are finally cemented the dentist usually wants the fixed denture to stay in place indefinitely unless otherwise indicated. Zinc phosphate cement is water/saliva soluble so any small gaps around the retaining crowns may allow dissolution of the cement and cause a loosening or dislodging of the fixed prosthesis or bridge or denture. However, this seems to occur only years after cementation.

Why is it important?

This is only important if the prosthesis or bridge is meant to stay fixed indefinitely.

Perspectives

There are less soluble and insoluble cements available. The dentist should be aware of the chemical properties of the various cements and select an appropriate cement for that individual patient.
