What is it about?

This preprint reports a retrospective clinical study of a pressureless middle-ear test (Medwave PLAI) compared with standard tympanometry. Researchers found the device’s resonance frequency (fR) can distinguish normal (type A) from immobile/effusion ears (type B), while peak admittance (P) could not. Age influenced results in healthy ears, and a case study showed PLAI tracked changes after ear surgery.

Why is it important?

The method is quick, less uncomfortable than tympanometry, and may be useful when pressure-based tests aren’t possible, but further prospective studies are needed.

Perspectives

This study provides early data about the comparison of PLAI / medwave and the tympanometry being the gold standard in middle ear analysis. Further research is needed to verfify the differentiation of types A and B and investigate wether other tympanometry types may be identified by PLAI using other parameters that are currently not in the main focus of the registered CE device medwave.
