What is it about?

In this background report, we examine the sustainability of regional development in relation to global goals and present a number of indicators and tools derived from them that are suitable for promoting the goals at the local level. The basic idea is that development that does not promote global sustainability cannot be sustainable at the local level either, because there can be no sustainable development on a non-viable planet.

Why is it important?

Planetary Sustainability should always be the starting point for assessing the Sustainability of regional development. It can be seen as a kind of boundary condition, as any activity that jeopardizes Planetary Sustainability should not be supported, at least by regional development funds. The question of whether this categorical imperative should be applied at the level of individual projects or at the level of the whole program, and what is the role of compensation in achieving balance, remains to be clarified.

Perspectives

A project or business that runs counter to global sustainability goals cannot have a longer-term future and should therefore not be supported. Similarly, pioneering global issues will also contribute to international competitiveness in the long-run.
