What is it about?

Kidney biopsies are used to diagnose different types of kidney disease. Looking through the microscope at the kidney, pathologists are able to make diagnoses. We studied whether the findings through the microscope ("histopathology") could help doctors also predict which patients would develop kidney failure in the future. We found that certain findings on the biopsy were indeed able to do this, even after taking into account the type of kidney disease patients had.

Why is it important?

Using the biopsy to help predict kidney failure could help doctors take care of their patients with kidney disease. The findings also highlights factors that are important in the development of kidney failure.

Perspectives

This article highlights the importance of collaboration - between pathologists and nephrologists and also across three outstanding institutions in Boston.
