What is it about?

A new, simple to use but accurate bearing capacity calculation method for a granular layer on a clay subgrade was derived from a review of published numerical analysis and centrifuge physical modelling studies of the problem.

Why is it important?

The design of working platforms for piling rigs and crane platforms is safety critical but previous design methods were difficult to use, too approximate or overly conservative. This new method addresses all those drawbacks giving safe but economic designs for working platforms.

Perspectives

A new method was also needed to introduce the benefit of stabilising geogrids in an accurate way so that thinner platforms can be constructed leading to cost, time and carbon savings in construction.
