What is it about?
Patients with advanced thyroid cancer often require long-term treatment, making the preservation of quality of life an important goal alongside tumor control. In this study, we evaluated health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) in patients with unresectable BRAF V600E-mutated thyroid cancer who received the combination of encorafenib and binimetinib. We used two validated patient-reported outcome questionnaires developed by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC): the QLQ-C30 and the thyroid cancer-specific QLQ-THY34.

Why is it important?
Targeted therapies can improve tumor response and survival, but they may also cause side effects that affect patients’ daily lives. For thyroid cancer, especially differentiated thyroid cancer, patients may live for many years with their disease. Therefore, understanding how treatment affects symptoms, functioning, and overall quality of life is essential when making treatment decisions.
Perspectives
As oncologists, we often focus on tumor response and survival. However, for patients with thyroid cancer, maintaining quality of life is equally important. We hope these findings help clinicians and patients make more informed treatment decisions together.
