What is it about?
IkBa interacts with VDAC and hexokinase 2 at mitochondria to prevent cytochrome c release and apoptosis of tumor cells, independently of its function as an NF‐κB inhibitor. IkBa resides at the outer mitochondrial membrane. IkBa associates with VDAC1 and hexokinase 2 to inhibit the dissociation of HK2. IkBa prevents Bax‐mediated cytochrome c release for apoptosis induction. This novel anti‐apoptotic activity of IkBa is independent of NF‐kB retention.

Why is it important?
This study is important because it uncovers a previously unappreciated role of IkBa and opens new study hypothesis for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
