What is it about?

In this paper, we discussed the vortex tube-based cooling system which is used to minimize the cutting temperature during machining of titanium alloy. Carbon dioxide gas is used as a working fluid which is supplied at low temperature and high pressure. Normally in industries cutting temperature is minimized by using cutting fluids but it causes so many problems like environmental pollution, health hazards to workers, etc. In the present work, vortex tube cooling system (VTCS) is developed, and CO2 gas was used as coolant in the machining of titanium alloy. The variation of cutting temperature and cutting force with coolant temperature and time were analyzed in VTCS. Different cooling approaches such as dry condition, compressed gas cooling, cool compressed gas cooling, and vortex tube cooling system are discussed while performing turning of Ti–6Al–4V under similar cutting conditions (speed, feed, and depth of cut).
