What is it about?
Incorporating sustainability concepts into the higher education is an approach for preparing more capable and knowable next-generation engineers. Engineering design courses are suitable for introducing sustainability concepts and basic sustainability assessment and improvement methods. The paper shared the educational experience in sustainability manufacturing through a capstone design project in Department of Chemical Engineering at Wayne State University. Our four-year practice shows that senior students fully equipped with the fundamental knowledge in chemical engineering can fully understand the importance of addressing sustainability issues in industrial system design and beyond. After carefully designed lectures for introducing sustainable engineering elements and methods, the students were able to apply them to complex process or plant design and sustainability assessment.
