What is it about?

Even though polyurethane (PU) condoms and over-the-counter personal lubricants (PLs) have been used together for nearly 30 years and sales of personal lubricants are proliferating in recent years, to date no positive control exists to validate the method for testing compatibility of a PU condom with a PL. Instead, the “mineral oil on latex condom” combination is used to check instrument status prior to testing PU condoms with PLs; if that test is successful, it is assumed that tests of a PL on PU using identical instrumentation would be accurate. Using laboratory data, for the first time in the history of PU condoms, we met this unmet need by identifying a few safe-to-handle positive control(s) which could be used for developing a method for determining compatibility of personal lubricants with polyurethane condoms.
