What is it about?
The paper devoted to one of the thermal-chemical treatment methods - boroaluminizing. It is used to increase wear and oxidation resistance in high temperatures of metals and alloys by means of formation on the surface borides and aluminides. The authors tried to enhance the method of boroaluminizing by using thermocycling - cyclic heating and cooling treatment.

Why is it important?
Multicomponent diffusion layers, such as boroaluminizing, provide a wider range of properties compared to single component TCT, such as boriding. It was discovered that the combination of thermocycling with TCT in boroaluminizing has a positive effect on the microstructure of low carbon steel and increases its oxidation resistance in comparison with isothermal treatment
Perspectives
Finding new and more efficient ways to enhance surface properties of machine components and tools is crucial for mechanical engineering and related industries. Boron-based diffusion layers and coatings are capable to provide enhanced mechanical and physical properties.
