What is it about?
Neutronic technique functions as a giant micro scope. It uses neutron beam to see activities of various materials, like metals and water etc., at atomic levels. With different sample environment equipment for the materials to be observed, engineers and scientists can see different behaviors of the materials, like how atoms are moving and how fatigue cracks are growing under different temperature, pressure and corrosive liquid. The engineers and scientists can therefore obtain the most exciting and useful new information.

Why is it important?
As literature review show that none of the neutron diffraction and X-ray experiments conducted so far under cyclic corrosive liquid conditions with a maximum pressure of 0.3 MPa for SA508-3 steel due to lack of such sample environment. Consequently, behavior of SA508-3 steel, which is widely used in nuclear power industry and under such service conditions, remains less explored. This is the first attempt to report this kind of sample environment with its features, preliminary offline test and test results. Description of future neutron diffraction experiment is also given.
Perspectives
As so far no literatures are available for the authors’ work, it is hoped that this paper can evoke some interest of research activities in this area. Namely, using this kind sample environment to investigate SA508-3 steel etc. materials under combined corrosive liquid and tensile loading conditions for various industries including nuclear power industry in a wider range and a deeper depth.
