What is it about?

A small, inexpensive, and robust soil test was developed that quickly produced excellent results. The test involves inserting a relatively long cylindrical balloon into the soil that indicates how stiff and strong the soils are. These devices are known as pressuremeters. A small diameter pressuremeter was developed and its results were compared to the most important engineering data found in the field. All the comparisons are outstanding and will help engineers be more efficient. This new equipment has the potential to replace current tests which involve radioactive sources placed in the soil.
