Coefficient of Thermal Expansion and Thermally Induced Internal Cracking of Asphalt Mixes

What is it about?

We have developed a simple test device measuring the coefficient of thermal expansion/contraction (CTE) of asphalt mixture. CTE values of asphalt mixture show a transition at low temperatures. We show for the first time that this CTE transition is due to internal cracks within the asphalt mixture and can be used to determine the low temperature cracking potential of asphalt mixtures.
