A 4D Soil-Structure Interaction Model Testing Apparatus

What is it about?

When a pile or any other type of foundation is inserted in the ground what happens below the ground level remains mysterious. For the first time, thanks to the novel loading frame developed, we show that using X-ray CT it is possible to visualize the real-time interaction of foundations during model scale experiments. The formation of fractures in rocks or the way tree roots interact during a pushover experiment can now be observed and used to better understand the mechanics of underground structures.
