What is it about?

Complexity and cost of unsaturated soil testing equipment have made it difficult to enter among the common equipment of soil mechanics laboratory and geotechnical practice, limiting it just to research institutions. Therefore, developing simple procedures and inexpensive methods is crucial for the future of unsaturated soil testing. In this study, a novel procedure was developed to measure the total volume change of the unsaturated soils in triaxial testing. The principle of the proposed method was based on cell fluid volume measurements corrected by the assumption of viscoelastic behavior for the triaxial setup.
